We had a great conversation with Meredith Blis on The Chris & Sandy Show plus her world exclusive Zero Gravity Lyric Video premiere on our show!
We talked about many things from her growing up in a musical family, passion, music, sacrifices, her video, she told some stories to a whole lot more!
Meredith Blis is an award-winning singer/songwriter, pianist, and composer. The multi-genre artist’s
originality and artistry are a reflection of her real-life experiences and emotions. She embraces her diverse
musical influences ranging from Bach to jazz to modern electronica. Her unique style is inspired by trailblazing
artists including Sia, Florence + the Machine, Annie Lennox, and Adele, while her raw apporoach is reflective
of singer/songwriters like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and Sarah McLachlan. Blis’ rich musical production is
sparked by the creativity found in the music of Aurora, Banks, and Alex da Kid.
Originally from New Jersey, Blis grew up around the music industry and music was always an integral part of
her life. Her father was an executive at Arista Records working under Clive Davis and alongside celebrities
including L.A. Reid, Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, etc. Early on, Blis began playing saxophone and
piano. Through her teen years, she had a passion for modern dance, and her focus shifted to songwriting
following two knee surgeries while in college. She attended The Juilliard School extension division in New
York, studying classical composition and music theory by day, and performing blues, covers, and eventually,
her own songs in the city by night.
Blis finds music to be the ideal outlet for inspiration and healing. During her college years, while learning to
accept the reality of no longer being able to pursue her dream of becoming a professional dancer, her mother
passed away from cancer. This loss was followed by the death of her grandmother a year later, and shortly
after, the untimely death of her father. Clouded by grief, loss, and pain, Blis turned to music. “Making music
became a strong place of grounding for me. It kept me afloat when it felt like the rest of my life was falling
apart. It was one of the most dificult times of my life, and it’s still a blur, but music helped me through that,”
commented Blis. During this devastating time, she would play a piece of classical music to comfort her. “For
some reason, that was the one thing that always made sense to me. At the end of the day, we all share similar
challenges, losses, and emotions. The magical thing about music is, it has a way of connecting us and saying
you’re not alone,” added Blis.
Blis grew tired of city life and moved to Taos, New Mexico where she fell in love with the mountains and
open sky. It was there she recorded her award-winning albums, A Purple Kind of Blue and Let It Rain, in
between teaching yoga and performing locally. In 2010, she relocated to Nashville to pursue a songwriting
career, and soon after, came to the realization that writing solely for others wasn’t completely satisfying her
creative voice, and that ignited her passion to compose and perform again.
Incorporating Ableton Live, MIDI Controllers and live looping into her performances has opened up an
exciting new world for the artist. This has further developed her passion for sound design and production as
well as an undeniable obsession for technology and electronic music.
Blis’ emotional sensitivity as an artist stems from the belief that music has the power to inspire others, create
change, and uplift vibrations, and her life and career stand as a testament to the healing power of music. She is
also an innovative and beloved yoga instructor, as well as a dedicated philanthropist who has worked with
organizations including Musicians on Call, Yoga for Youth, RAINN, Change Direction, and the AFSP.
In 2017, upon the release of her single “Shine Again,” Blis created the #ShineAgainProject, an online
campaign to raise mental health awareness, build community and change mental health stigmas through the
song’s musical message of hope and healing. Blis recalls, “Sometimes I look back, and I don’t know how I
made it. Music has enabled me to express so many dif icult things and survive many painful complexities. I
hope my music and words can help provide listeners strength, empower people on their journey, and bring them
light.”
